Dextral to sinistral coiling switch in planktic foraminifer Morozovella during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum

چکیده
Coiling direction is a basic characteristic of trochospiral planktic foraminifera. Modifications in the coiling within ancient foraminiferal populations may reflect important changes evolution or environment, yet they remain scarcely discussed. Here we investigate fluctuations Morozovella assemblages from sections that span interval peak Cenozoic warmth, Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO; ~53–49 million years ago, Ma), at Atlantic Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites 1051, 1258 and 1263. At all ODP sites, morozovellids display dominant dextral preference during preceding However, species modify their preferentially to sinistral EECO, <200 kyr after K/X event (~52.8 providing new biostratigraphic tool for correlation. Did Photosymbiont Bleaching Lead to the Demise of Planktic Foraminifer Morozovella at the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum?
The symbiont-bearing mixed-layer planktic foraminiferal genera Morozovella and Acarinina were among the most important calcifiers of early Paleogene tropical-subtropical oceans. A marked and permanent switch in the abundance of these genera is known to have occurred at low-latitude sites at the beginning of the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO), such that the relative abundance of Morozovell...

متن کاملFossil palm beetles refine upland winter temperatures in the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum.
Eocene climate and associated biotic patterns provide an analog system to understand their modern interactions. The relationship between mean annual temperatures and winter temperatures-temperature seasonality-may be an important factor in this dynamic. Fossils of frost-intolerant palms imply low Eocene temperature seasonality into high latitudes, constraining average winter temperatures there ...
متن کاملTiming of Shell Size Increase and Decrease of the Planktic Foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (Sinistral) During the Pleistocene, IODP Exp. 303 Site U1304, the North Atlantic Ocean
We made shell size measurements of the planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) using samples from IODP Site U1304, the North Atlantic. We found that mean and maximum shell sizes began to increase around 1.1 Ma, and that several episodic changes in test size occurred during 0.6 – 0.35 Ma. Test size reached a maximum during the late Quaternary. Based on correlation with previ...
متن کاملOptimal Synthesis of the Asymmetric Sinistral/Dextral Markov-Dubins Problem
We consider a variation of the classical Markov–Dubins problem dealing with curvature-constrained, shortest paths in the plane with prescribed initial and terminal positions and tangents, when the lower and upper bounds of the curvature of the path are not necessarily equal. The motivation for this problem stems from vehicle navigation applications, when a vehicle may be biased in taking turns ...
